Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment at a Young Age

August 1st, 2018

Contrary to popular belief, orthodontic treatment is not just for older children and teens who have alignment and spacing issues. At our Mount Vernon, WA office, orthodontic treatment offers many benefits for children at a young age.

Dr. Andrew Nalin can identify your child’s alignment issues early, and provide treatment as the teeth begin to develop. It’s crucial to start dental care early, not only for proper dental health and cosmetic benefits, but to improve your child’s overall health.

The Benefits of Straighter Teeth

Aside from cosmetic benefits, starting orthodontic treatment at a young age offers many other advantages. A pediatric dentist can help guide the teeth into their proper position to prevent teeth extractions or bite problems, and even reduce the extent of orthodontic treatment later on.

Your youngster will enjoy the confidence of having straight teeth that, as an added bonus, will be easier to clean. Parents will be happy to hear the earlier your child gets treatment, the less your orthodontic expenses could be; plus, it is often covered by dental insurance.

Stages of Orthodontic Treatment

Multiple stages are included in early orthodontic treatment, but there are three main stages.

Stage 1: Treatment starts around age two or three until the child is around six. This stage includes preventive measures to avoid habits that lead to crooked teeth, and monitoring how the teeth grow in.

Stage 2: The first permanent teeth appear around age six to 12 years old and the dentist looks at possible early treatment for misalignment or bite issues.

Stage 3: Any further problems with permanent teeth are corrected during adolescence.

Dr. Andrew Nalin and our staff are able to see early on whether your child will need to have braces in adolescence. Early treatment means fewer procedures, cleaner teeth, and less expense for parents. It’s a win-win for everyone!

What are the benefits of early orthodontic treatment?

July 25th, 2018

Orthodontic treatment should begin earlier than most parents are apt to assume. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, orthodontic treatment should start at around seven years of age.

Dr. Andrew Nalin can evaluate your child’s existing and incoming teeth early on to determine whether treatment might be necessary or not.

What is early orthodontic treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment usually begins when a child is eight or nine years old. In stage one, bite problems such as underbites and the jaw’s growth pattern are corrected. It can also help to make room in the mouth for the permanent teeth to take their proper places as they come in, which reduces the chance that the patient will require extractions later, due to overcrowding.

Does your child need early orthodontic treatment?

If you notice any of the following characteristics in your son or daughter, you may want to have a chat with Dr. Andrew Nalin.

  • Early loss of baby teeth (before age five)
  • Late loss of baby teeth (after age five or six)
  • Your child’s teeth do not meet properly or at all
  • Your child is a mouth breather
  • Front teeth are crowded (you probably wouldn’t see this until your child is about seven or eight)
  • Protruding teeth, typically in the front
  • Biting or chewing difficulties
  • A speech impediment
  • Your child’s jaw shifts when he or she opens or closes the mouth
  • Your child is older than five years and still sucks a thumb

What are the benefits of seeking orthodontic treatment early?

There are many benefits to early orthodontic treatment. One of the biggest is that, because a child’s jaw and bones are soft and pliable, corrective procedures such as braces can work much faster than they do for adults.

Treatment at our Mount Vernon, WA office can enable your child to avoid lengthy procedures, extraction, or surgery in adulthood. Early orthodontic care will give your son or daughter a healthy, stable smile.

Cosmetic Orthodontics: Lingual braces vs. clear aligners

July 11th, 2018

For more than a century, braces have helped patients achieve straighter teeth, and treatment methods continue to emerge. Today, braces have the potential to be discreet while still producing great results.

If you want straighter teeth without the look of traditional metal braces, Dr. Andrew Nalin can offer multiple options to give you the smile of your dreams.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners use a series of custom-made trays that shift teeth gradually into place. For patients who need mild-to-moderate corrections, this can be a great option.

Aside from being clear, another benefit is that you can change these aligners at home instead of having to visit our Mount Vernon, WA office every few weeks. They can even be removed while you eat and clean your teeth!

If you wear the aligners as instructed, you could have straighter teeth in about six to 12 months.

Lingual Braces

Like traditional braces, Incognito™ lingual braces are attached to teeth. The difference is that they are attached to the back of your teeth so you won’t be able to see them.

This is an appealing option for patients who need moderate-to-severe corrections. The braces are non-removable and will be adjusted during your regular orthodontic visits. They yield highly successful results.

If you want a straighter smile but are not sure whether you are a candidate for either of these options, give Dr. Andrew Nalin a call today! Our Mount Vernon, WA team would be happy to identify the best treatment option for your needs.
